How Much Data Do You Need for Japan?
How much data you need in Japan depends mainly on how much you use Google Maps, social media, video and hotspot sharing.
As a practical estimate, a light user typically uses around 1–2 GB a day. Someone posting photos daily may use around 2–3 GB. Anyone streaming video or uploading a lot can use 5 GB or more. Multiply your daily range by your trip length for a rough total.

Multiply your daily range by the number of days you will be in Japan.

- how much you share the connection by hotspot

Ranked from heaviest to lightest:

Netflix, YouTube and Disney+. Usually the heaviest use and it increases with video quality.

Instagram, TikTok and Xiaohongshu are mostly video, so scrolling behaves like streaming.

WhatsApp text and voice notes are negligible by comparison.
Two settings make the biggest difference: turning off cloud photo backup over mobile data, and dropping video quality to standard definition. Together they can roughly halve a heavy day.

The hotspot difference is the one most people miss. On the fixed plan, every gigabyte you buy can go through the hotspot. On the unlimited plan your own phone is unlimited, but hotspot sharing has its own separate cap. If you plan to run a laptop or a companion's phone off your connection all day, check that cap first.
Both plans arrive as a QR code by email, need no app, and can be installed before you fly. Neither includes a phone number, so they cannot make regular calls or receive SMS. You can browse the full range on the Japan SIM and eSIM collection.

How much data do I need for 7 days in Japan?
Around 7–14 GB if you mostly use maps and messaging, around 14–21 GB if you post photos daily, and 35 GB or more if you stream or upload video. Budget towards the higher end if you plan to watch something on long train journeys.
Does Google Maps use a lot of data in Japan?
Google Maps generally uses much less data than video streaming. Your usage can increase if you download maps, browse many photos or keep other apps running in the background.
How much data does Instagram use while travelling?
Enough to be the biggest driver for most social travellers. Instagram is mostly video now, so scrolling Reels behaves more like streaming than browsing, and uploading Stories adds more on top.
Does watching YouTube use a lot of mobile data?
Yes. Video streaming is the heaviest common use of mobile data, and it scales directly with resolution. Lower the playback quality, or download episodes over hotel Wi-Fi before you travel.
Can I use hotspot with a Japan eSIM?
Yes, with both plans, but they work differently. With eSIM Japan your full data allowance can be used for hotspot sharing. With eSIM Japan Infinite Data hotspot has its own separate allowance based on plan length, for example 6 GB on a 7-day plan and 30 GB on a 31-day plan.
Should I choose unlimited data for Japan?
Not automatically. A fixed plan often covers a light or moderate trip comfortably and costs less. Unlimited suits you if you stream regularly, upload video, work while travelling, or simply do not want to think about a data balance.
If your main reason is heavy hotspot use, check the hotspot allowance first. A fixed plan may give you more sharing capacity.
Can I keep using WhatsApp with a Japan eSIM?
Yes. WhatsApp works over data and stays linked to your existing Malaysian number. These eSIMs have no phone number and cannot receive SMS, so keep your Malaysian SIM active if you might need a verification code.
