Overview

The Maokong Gondola is one of Taipei's most scenic and beloved leisure attractions, offering a breathtaking aerial cable car journey through the forested hillsides of southern Taipei from Taipei Zoo Station all the way up to the tea-growing highlands of Maokong. Operated by the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation, the gondola system stretches approximately 4.03 kilometres across four stations — Taipei Zoo, Taipei Zoo South, Zhinan Temple, and Maokong — rising steadily through dense subtropical forest and offering sweeping panoramic views over the city, the surrounding mountain ranges, and the verdant valleys below. It is one of the few urban gondola systems in Asia that combines effortless scenic transportation with a genuine cultural and culinary destination at its summit, making it equally appealing as a sightseeing experience, a family day out, and a popular evening excursion for both locals and international visitors.The gondola fleet includes both standard enclosed cabins and the much-sought-after Crystal Cabins — gondolas fitted with a transparent glass floor panel that allows guests to look directly down through the cabin base to the forest canopy and terrain far below, adding a thrilling and unforgettable dimension to the aerial journey for those willing to embrace the vertigo-inducing perspective. Each cabin accommodates up to 8 passengers and the ride between the bottom and top stations takes approximately 30 minutes each way, delivering consistently spectacular views throughout. At the Maokong summit, the gondola connects visitors to one of Taiwan's most charming tea culture destinations — a hillside community of traditional teahouses, restaurants, and scenic viewpoints nestled among the tea plantations that have defined the area's identity for generations. The Maokong area is particularly celebrated for its Tieguanyin and Four Seasons oolong teas, and a visit to one of the many rustic teahouses perched along the hillside ridge is an essential and deeply enjoyable part of the full Maokong experience.

Opening hours Tuesday 09:00 to 12:30. Wednesday to Friday 09:00 to 21:00. Saturday and Sunday 09:00 to 22:00. Closed Mondays. Open on Tue-Fri, 9:00am-9:00pm Closed on Mon Open on Sat-Sun, 9:00am-10:00pm.

Important rules
  • No age or height restrictions apply. The Crystal Cabin glass floor may not be suitable for guests with a fear of heights or severe vertigo conditions.
  • The gondola is busiest on weekends and public holidays. Queues for Crystal Cabins can be long during peak periods — early arrival or weekday visits are recommen.
  • The gondola may suspend operations during typhoons, heavy rain, strong winds, or lightning alerts. Always check operational status before visiting during Taiwan.
  • No dress code required. Guests are advised to remain seated and avoid rocking the cabin during the ride. Modest attire is recommended for visits to Zhinan Templ.
  • Outside food and beverages are permitted on the gondola and at Maokong. The hilltop area offers numerous teahouses and restaurants serving local Taiwanese cuisi.
