Overview

Zoo Negara is Malaysia's national zoo, opened in 1963 and run by the Malaysian Zoological Society, a non-governmental organisation set up to create the first local zoo for Malaysians. It sits on a large open site in Ulu Klang, around 30 minutes from central Kuala Lumpur, where you can visit and see its animals.

  • Over 5,100 animals from 476 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.
  • Over 90% of the animals live in spacious exhibits with landscaping that suits their natural surroundings.
  • The Mini Bee Museum, in the middle of the zoo, explains the many types of bees found in Malaysia.

Zoo Negara Malaysia is a world-renowned zoo managed by the Malaysian Zoological Society and has been welcoming visitors since 1963. Home to over 5,000 animals from more than 400 species, the zoo features mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Set within a spacious open-concept environment, visitors can explore naturalistic exhibits and enjoy an educational and enjoyable wildlife experience close to Kuala Lumpur city.

What to expect

Zoo Negara, also known as the National Zoo of Malaysia, is a 110-acre zoological park in Selangor and home to over 5,000 animals from more than 450 species. The zoo features themed zones such as the African Savannah, Malaysian Rainforest, and Reptile Park, where visitors can see animals like tigers, lions, elephants, giraffes, and orangutans. Visitors can also enjoy animal shows, feeding activities, and interactive experiences, while learning about the zoo’s conservation and endangered species breeding programmes.

Things to note

  • Accessibility: Wheelchair ramps and designated accessible pathways are available for most animal enclosures.
  • Restriction: Children under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Restriction: For safety reasons, touching or feeding the animals is strictly prohibited. Feeding areas for specific animals, but only with zoo staff supervision.
  • Restriction: Bringing outside food and drinks into the zoo is not allowed and Pets of any kind are not allowed inside the zoo.
