Shibuya Sky Guide: Tickets, Best Time to Visit and What to Expect
Yes, if you want an open-air view from directly above Shibuya Crossing. Entry is by timed slot, tickets go on sale at midnight Japan time exactly two weeks before your date, and the sunset slots go first.
Morning slots are easier to get, cost less and are much quieter. Allow about an hour, though there is no time limit once you are inside.

How the tickets work
Shibuya Sky sells date and time specific tickets. You pick a twenty minute window to enter, not a whole day, and you go up at that time.
Web tickets for a given date go on sale at midnight Japan time exactly two weeks earlier. If you want a late afternoon or sunset slot, that midnight is when to buy, because those are the first to go.
- Booking online costs less than buying at the counter on the day, and you skip the ticket queue.
- Entry between 10:00 and 15:00 is priced lower than later slots, so the quiet times are also the cheap ones.
- Web tickets can be cancelled free of charge up to the day before. Counter tickets cannot be cancelled at all.
- If a date has not sold out you can still buy online on the day, which is usually better than queuing.
The best time to visit, and whether sunset is worth it
Sunset is the slot everyone wants, and it is genuinely good: the sky changes while you are standing in the open air above the busiest crossing in Tokyo. It is also the hardest to book, the most crowded, and the most weather dependent. Nobody can promise you a clear sunset, and a flat grey evening from 229 metres up looks much like a flat grey evening from anywhere else.
Our observation: if sunset is not a must, a morning visit is one of the best ways to experience Shibuya Sky. It is far quieter, you wait less for a spot at the edge, and the view over the city is the same.
There is a middle option too. Because there is no time limit once you are inside, plenty of visitors book an afternoon slot and simply stay until the light changes. You are not buying a sunset slot; you are buying an entry time.
What if the sunset slots are gone?
They often are, so plan around it rather than hoping.
- Book an afternoon slot and stay up there. This is the most reliable way to be on the rooftop at sunset.
- Take a morning slot instead and treat it as a daytime view. Clearer air, fewer people, lower price.
- Check again nearer the date. Free cancellation until the day before means slots do come back.
What to expect when you get there
Entry is on the 14th floor of Shibuya Scramble Square, and lifts take you up to the 46th. There are three parts: the approach, the rooftop, and an indoor level.
The rooftop, SKY STAGE, is the reason to come. It is completely open air, which is why what you can carry up there is limited. Bags and loose items go into lockers on the way, and Hello1010 found the lockers free to use. Phones and a camera on a strap are fine.
Our observation: tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed on the rooftop. Sort your bag into a locker before you join the queue for the lift rather than at the top.
SKY GALLERY, the indoor level on the 46th floor, is enclosed and stays open when the rooftop does not. It is where you end up if the weather turns.
Weather, and what happens if the rooftop closes
The rooftop closes in rain, lightning and strong wind. That is not unusual, and it is worth knowing before you pick a date in June or in typhoon season.
If the rooftop is shut at your entry time, a web ticket can be cancelled free of charge that day, as long as you cancel before you go in. Check the weather the morning of your slot and decide then. Counter tickets do not carry that protection.
Fitting it into a Shibuya day
Shibuya Sky works best as a fixed point that the rest of the day bends around, because your entry time is not movable.
A morning slot leaves the whole afternoon for Shibuya Crossing at street level, Miyashita Park, and the walk up to Takeshita Street and Omotesando. An afternoon slot works better in reverse: do Harajuku first, then come back and go up. Either way it slots into Day 3 of our Tokyo 6D5N itinerary.
